How Do Teeth Change With Age?

Have you ever heard someone say teeth do not last a lifetime? While that is certainly not true and teeth can indeed last a lifetime with proper care, our teeth do change as we age.

It is helpful to be mindful of the fact that teeth change and take necessary precautions to avoid any risks that may exist due to age.

How teeth change with age

It makes sense that teeth change with age considering all that they are responsible for and how much they are used throughout each day.

Being aware of the change that is inevitable, however, helps to prevent teeth complications or complete teeth loss as we age.

Wear and tear

As mentioned, our teeth are vulnerable to a lot of wear and tear throughout each day. Teeth are used for biting, chewing and some accidental grinding throughout each day.

Fortunately, teeth enamel, which is the outermost layer of defense for teeth, is incredibly strong. In fact, it is the second strongest substance on the entire planet. Unfortunately, however, the human bite can exert as much as 200 pounds of pressure, which can take its toll on even the strongest of substances and cause enamel, and other parts of the tooth, to become damaged.

Risk of infection

Bacteria develops in our mouth, and it puts us at risk of developing an infection if the bacteria is not constantly killed and rinsed out of our mouth. When an oral infection develops, it can lead to a need to perform invasive procedures in order to save the teeth.

In some instances, teeth infections that are ignored can lead to the need for teeth extraction, requiring a restorative procedure to replace the missing teeth.

How to maintain healthy teeth

So what can be done to ensure teeth do not change too much and lead to serious oral health concerns or require extraction?

The answer is simple: practice good oral hygiene and visit the dentist regularly to ensure good oral health.

Good oral hygiene

The best way to avoid teeth changing in a negative manner as we age is to practice good oral hygiene, which should include brushing several times each day, flossing and using mouthwash at least once a day and keeping a close eye out for any oral health concerns.

Additionally, using fluoride treatments, which helps fight bacteria and strengthen enamel, can be a great way to promote good oral hygiene.

Regular dental visits

Anyone who experiences any oral health concerns, such as a painful tooth, swollen or bleeding gums or teeth discoloration, should visit the dentist as soon as possible to properly diagnose, treat and prevent the oral health concern.

In the event teeth seem healthy, it is still important to visit the dentist regularly to ensure good oral health, especially as we grow older. By doing so, dentists can ensure there are not any concerns that need to be treated, and dentists can even spot the earliest warning signs of an issue before the issue develops, allowing prevention of serious teeth concerns.
