Visit Our Newport Beach Dentistry Office for Your Periodontal Health

At Newport Beach Dentistry, we provide periodontal treatments that will prevent gum disease from affecting the lives of our patients. Periodontal disease affects a large percentage of adults in the U.S.

The reason that so many people have periodontitis is because it is usually painless, at least until a complication happens. Because pain is what motivates most people to see the dentist, periodontal disease is easy to ignore.

By raising awareness about the long-term effects of periodontal disease, Newport Beach Dentistry tries to get people to keep their mouths healthy.

Understanding periodontal disease

Periodontitis is an infection of the gums, jawbone and soft tissues that hold the teeth in place. The infection causes the inflammation and destruction of the soft tissues and jawbone. Often but not always, periodontal disease occurs when gingivitis (mild gum disease) goes untreated. Sometimes, it happens all on its own.

Plaque, infection and gum disease

Plaque is a sticky film that coats the tongue, teeth and gums. It is made up of food particles, saliva, mucus and harmful mouth bacteria. Periodontitis occurs when plaque is allowed to accumulate on the teeth and the pockets of the gums. The bacteria in the plaque use these prime locations to launch attacks inside the gums and roots of the teeth.

When the body fights the infection, the soft tissue and bone tissue become a battlefield. Soon, they get destroyed in the fight. Eventually, the teeth come loose and the jawbone develops pits and deep holes.

Who is likely to get periodontal disease?

There are certain risk factors for gum disease. Due to certain habits or inherited traits, some people are more likely to suffer from gum disease:

  • Older people: Usually, the symptoms of periodontitis start to appear in adults no younger than 30. Data collected by the CDC shows that around 70 percent of people aged 65 and above suffer from periodontal disease
  • Smokers
  • People with poor nutrition: People who eat lots of sugary foods are at a higher risk of getting periodontal disease
  • People with poor oral hygiene: Poor oral hygiene is the very thing that allows plaque to accumulate and attack the gums
  • People with a family history of gum disease
  • Underlying health conditions: Stress, diabetes and other illnesses weaken the immune system, which makes the body unable to fight the infection that causes periodontitis
  • Medication: Certain heart medications, contraceptives and antidepressants can cause harmful mouth bacteria to thrive

Treatment at Newport Beach Dentistry

If it is not caught early, periodontal disease becomes a chronic condition that never completely goes away. However, proper management can keep the condition from causing further damage to the tissues that surround the teeth.

That said, the disease is treated by scaling and root planing, which is the removal of plaque, tartar, bacteria and dead tissue from the gums and roots of the teeth. If the disease is very advanced, a periodontist will use gum flap surgery or laser treatment to remove the infection from the jaws and roots of the teeth.

Prevention is cheaper than treatment

Like with any disease, the best way to treat periodontitis is to make sure you never get it in the first place.

By eating healthy, cleaning your teeth twice a day and avoiding bad habits like smoking, you can go through your entire life without experiencing gum disease. Another way to protect yourself from periodontal disease is to get regular dental checkups. They act as an early warning system that alerts you to any trouble in your mouth.
